PVDF vs PE Coating: Which Aluminum Composite Panel Finish Is Right?

Two ACP panels can look identical on day one and look completely different ten years later. The difference is almost always the coating system on the aluminum skin. Choosing between PVDF and polyester (PE) coating is one of the most important decisions in any ACP specification — and one of the most commonly underestimated.

This guide compares the two chemistries on durability, cost, color range and best use cases. Browse our coated ranges at PVDF ACP and general ACP.

1. The Role of Coating on ACP

The aluminum skin itself protects the core from impact and weather. The paint system applied to that skin determines color stability, resistance to UV, acid rain, salt spray and industrial pollution. A well-selected coating keeps a façade looking new for decades; a cheap one fades, chalks and blisters within a few years. The coating system also defines how easily the panel can be cleaned, how resistant it is to graffiti, and how well it holds metallic and pearlescent effects.

2. Polyester (PE) Coating: Strengths and Limits

Polyester coatings are economical and available in a very wide color range, including metallic, high-gloss and textured finishes. They are an excellent choice for interior applications, signage, display boards and short-life exterior projects in mild climates. Their weakness is UV exposure: under strong sunlight, PE colors can fade and chalk within 3–7 years, and deep dark shades are especially prone to chalking. PE panels are well suited to our Interior ACP range and to digital-printing substrates that will be overprinted.

3. PVDF Coating: Premium Weathering

PVDF (polyvinylidene fluoride) is a fluoropolymer resin with exceptional resistance to UV, chemicals and salt spray. Leading PVDF coatings such as Kynar 500® and Hylar 5000® carry 20+ year warranties for color and gloss retention. On coastal buildings, high-rises and industrial zones, PVDF is the default specification. It is slightly more expensive and available in fewer bright neon shades than PE, but it is the standard for architectural façades designed to last 20 years or more.

4. FEVE and Other Premium Coating Options

FEVE (fluoroethylene vinyl ether) coatings sit between PVDF and PE in cost, offering excellent weathering and a wider color range including vivid metallics. They are popular in Asia for feature façades. For signage and print-grade panels, a PET or acrylic topcoat is used because it accepts digital ink better. For most Western architectural projects, PVDF remains the safest and most specified choice.

5. Side-by-Side Comparison

  • Weathering: PVDF 20+ years; FEVE 15+ years; PE 3–7 years under direct sun.
  • Color range: PE widest; FEVE strong in vivid metallics; PVDF strong in solids and standard metallics.
  • Cost: PVDF roughly 20–35% higher per square metre than PE; FEVE 10–20% above PE.
  • Scratch and stain resistance: Comparable across all three; both use a primer + topcoat build.
  • Best for: PVDF = exterior curtain walls, coastal, high-rise; FEVE = feature façades; PE = interior, signage, low-rise, short-cycle projects.

6. Which Finish Should You Choose?

If the panel faces the sky, the sea, or a busy road — choose PVDF. If it goes on an interior wall, a kitchen splashback, a bathroom waterproof panel or a freestanding sign, a high-quality PE finish is usually the smarter cost decision. For long-span exterior projects, also confirm the panel body uses an FR core alongside the PVDF skin, especially for tall buildings.

7. Maintaining Coated ACP Over Time

Even the best coating needs basic care. Wash the façade twice a year with mild soap and low-pressure water to remove atmospheric grime, bird droppings and industrial fallout. Avoid abrasive pads and solvent-based cleaners. With this simple maintenance, a PVDF façade will retain its color and gloss well beyond the warranty period. PE panels, by contrast, will begin to chalk and fade regardless of cleaning, which is why they are rarely specified for premium exteriors.
